Still Sucking Oxy

Just a quick entry to let everyone know the Devil Dog and I are still surviving, although he's a really shitty conversationalist. He does listen well, tho. Right now he's trying to steal my pot of Kona.

This morning was the podiatrist at the VA. The timing was good, because yesterday I managed to re-break a toe that I originally broke about 4 years ago. The foot doc, Dr Wilson, is amazing. He treats every one of his patients like royalty, which makes me look forward to seeing him. He had the foot x-rayed then gave me a box of about 100 gauze sponges and three rolls of tape to splint my toes together.

I still have a week and a day before She Who Must Be Obeyed comes home. Believe me, it can't come soon enough!

Disappointed But Not Surprised

So the U.S. Senate decided - by one vote - that the people of the United States are not to be allowed to determine whether the Stars and Stripes deserves protection.

That one vote would not, despite the gross ignorance in this nation to the contrary, have enacted the Amendment into law. Rather, it would have then gone to the States for the people to vote on. If enough States passed the vote, then the Amendment would have taken effect.

Remember the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA)? This would have had to undergone the exact same process. Unfortunately the Democrats - once again - feel that the citizenry can't be trusted to know what's good for themselves or the Nation.

A Little Good News

I heard last night that my father-in-law's surgery went pretty well, but they had to remove quite a bit more bowel than first expected. Right now he's resting in expensive scare for the next day or so and, if no complications show up, they'll move him to a regular room and he should be able to come home around the beginning of next week.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is spending a lot of time finding out what's going on, because her oldies are old school - if a doctor says something they don't question it. She (like me), on the other hand, doesn't play that game. She's going to be cornering the doctors and demanding answers and prognosis. She will also be getting together with her brothers to arrange some home care for her mum and dad, since they are both going to be laid up.

Meanwhile, Attitude With Legs had me over last night for dinner - lasagna made with my home-grown oregano and a salad with garden cukes. Wonderful!

It Just Keeps Getting Better

After several delays and flight re-routings, She Who Must Be Obeyed has arrived safe and mostly sound in Australia - over six hours late.

Once she arrived, she got an added bonus - she went because of her Dad's surgery, but found out that her Mum had a fall and broke her kneecap. Now she has to go in for an operation this week as well.

If luck were dynamite, this family couldn't blow a small fart.

Oldies But Goodies

For the past four years or so I've been doing the weekly bulletins for a local church - and dodging the thunderbolts every time I drop them off. One of the members of the church just sent this to me, and I figured it gives me a reason to get something posted:

COWS: Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that our government can track a cow born in Canada almost three years ago, right to the stall where she sleeps in the state of Washington? And, they tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 11 million illegal aliens wandering around our country. Maybe we should give them all a cow

THE CONSTITUTION: They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq. Why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it's worked for over 200 years and we're not using it anymore.

THE TEN COMMANDMENTS: The real reason that we can't have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse...You cannot post "Thou Shalt Not Steal," "Thou Shalt Not Commit Adultery" and "Thou Shall Not Lie" in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians -- it creates a hostile work environment.

I Hate When This Happens

On Thursday, She Who Must Be Obeyed is off home to Australia for a fortnight, leaving the Devil Dog and me to fend for ourselves.

I'm fully house broken, so survival is not a problem. Her dad, who's 82, is going to undergo surgery for cancer in the bowel so this may very well be her last chance to see her mum and dad. Her mum's around 80 as well and not doing the best so S.W.M.B.O. will really be able to help out.

This just tops off a perfect Father's Day weekend - Boy Wonder watched his little girl go off with the Wicked Bitch of the North on Saturday; while Attitude With Legs' significant other lost his father last Friday with the funeral yesterday.

I'm getting really tired of Karma biting me in the ass. I must have been a real shit in my past life.

Back Again -- And Highly Pissed Off

I think the main reason I've been staying away from posting is that I've finally gotten sick and tired of the news. It's almost impossible to get anything that's not slanted in one direction or the other; our wonderful elected representatives are still acting like spoiled children, and even the blogs - from Kos on the left to Misha or the right - have been giving me a severe case of the shits.

Then I saw this, thanks (I think) to the
Conservative Insurgent:

This cartoon, combined with Murtha's quotes where he has already tried and convicted the Marines who were in Haditha, just lit me right up.

I'm sick and f'kin tired of the Dem's version of justice. Let a member of our military be accused of anything, or let a Republican be accused, the assumption of innocence goes right out the f'kin window. Let a Dem be accused - and caught red-handed with the evidence - and it's a whole different story. McKinney walks away from an assault on a police officer and my local rep, Mel Watt, gets his nuts in a knot because William Jefferson is even looked at on ethical grounds.

I've gotten to the point where there isn't a national politician in this country that I'd walk across the street to piss on if they were on fire. But shit like this sends my rage meter right past the red line.

About Indigo

I just talked to my Blogmama Indigo and she's doing much better - apparently a week or so ago it was touch and go. She's staying with her daughter in Greenville for the time being, being treated like a Queen, and as yet has no burning desire to get on a computer.

But she sounded really good - good enough to give me a hard time, anyway! As I talk to her more I'll pass on any other news.

For the Old Farts

If you're under about 45, you might as well skip this post, because it's doubtful you'll have any memories of these.

For the rest of the Geezer Patrol out there - the ones who laid down on the back deck of the family sedan waving at the cops while Dad drove the pre-freeway roads to summer vacation - here's a couple of questions.

Remember the Burma Shave signs? The only one that ever stuck in my mind was:
He lit a match
To check his tank
That's why we call him
Burma Shave.
How about the rest of you? How many of the old rhymes can you remember? I'd love to hear from you!

Second, just down the street from me is an old Shell gas station:

I also saw an old Sinclair station shaped like a green dinosaur on a Frontage Road off I-35 north of Oklahoma City back in 2001. Are there any more of these old stations still around? I'm pretty sure this Shell station is the last of it's type in the country but I could be wrong.

So let me know - any Burma Shave rhymes you remember or any of the old gas stations you know of. To me these are part of this country's past that's worth passing on to the kiddies.
