Poor Baby!
It's getting to where you can't depend on anything these days!
Poor Jeremy Hinzman - here he went to all the trouble of deserting from the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, NC, using the Underground Railroad to transport him the furthest reaches of Toronto, only to find that the Canadian government won't give him political asylum!
Just because he voluntarily joined the United States Army, volunteered for Airborne status, why - he might face some "social discrimination" if he were to be sent back to the United States.
There are quite a few others sitting up in the Great Frozen North who are not unmoved by this decision. They might have to stay underground for the forseeable future.
As a statement from the Army said yesterday, "Each of us volunteered to serve, and the vasy majority serve honorably. AWOL and desertion are crimes that go against Army values, degrade unit readyness and, in time of war, may put the lives of other soldiers at risk."
