Decoration Day
It is believed that the Civil War (or the War of Northern Aggression, as it's known down here) was still going on when some Southern women organized and started decorating the graves of the Confederate dead.
While Waterloo, NY, is the official starting point for this day, there are many places that independently were celebrating the lives of their fallen.
Gen. John Logan officially proclaimed Memorial Day on 5 May 1868 in his General Order 11.
As today, not last Monday, is Memorial Day, please get your flags up before you leave for work and take a few moments sometime today to think of those - from the Revolutionary War to the Present - who have made the ultimate sacrifice in order to help protect the freedoms we enjoy.
May you all have a safe and blessed Memorial Day.
