Veterans Day
Believe it or not, this day was not created so that the stores could have 'Veterans Day Sales'. Truth be told, it wasn't even created to celebrate the sacrifices of our veterans - not as such, anyway.
This day was initially set aside as Armistice Day to remember the hour, day and month that World War One fighting ended. It was not until 1954 that President Eisenhower signed a bill changing the day to Veterans Day.
There has been so much written by other bloggers about today that anything I add would be gilding the lily - those of you who visit here regularly know who my usual suspects are. Go see what they have to say. To the rest of you, welcome to my humble abode and feel free to start wandering through the blogroll.
It's not really appropriate to wish a vet "Happy Veterans Day", because to most of us there's nothing happy about this day at all - but we will, each in our own way, celebrate the lives of those we have known. If you are lucky enough to know a veteran, simply say 'Thank You' and 'Welcome Home'.
You may be surprised at the reaction you get.
